We seek to fund research projects and white papers that investigate healthcare interoperability and touch at least one of our strategic initiatives.

Turn a promising healthcare idea into measurable impact. The NCPDP Foundation has opened its Fall 2026 request for grant proposals!

We are looking for research and innovative projects that advance healthcare standards, improve patient safety, expand access to care, and strengthen care coordination. Competitive proposals will clearly define the need, explain the anticipated benefit to patients, providers, communities, or the broader healthcare ecosystem, outline measurable outcomes, and a plan to share results widely.

Applications are welcomed from organizations committed to creating practical, lasting improvements in healthcare. Proposals are due Friday, October 23, 2026, by 5:00 p.m. MST.

FAQ’s

No, we will not make exceptions to the due date and time. All grant applications must be provided by the date and time specified on the request for proposals.

The NCPDP Foundation typically does not approve grants of more than $150,000.

We typically do not pay salaries based on the guideline that the operating cost should be no more than 10% of the total ask.

When the Foundation receives your grant application, you will receive a confirmation email within 24 business hours. If you do not receive a confirmation email, please contact Irfaan Ali via email at irfaan@ncpdpfoundation.org or by calling 480-477-1000.

The Foundation Committee and the NCPDP Foundation Board seek to review and approve grants by approximately 30 days following the submission due date. (Please note this timeline is subject to volunteer committee member availability.) After selection and approval, all grant submitters will receive an email sharing whether their proposal was selected. Please do not reach out to any Foundation contacts to inquire about the status of your grant application between the confirmation email receipt date and the date you receive the result.

Your project should further one or more of our charitable purposes:
  • Increasing Patient Access to Care
  • Enhancing Patient Safety, including through healthcare standards
  • Empowering Coordination of Care and Innovation for the benefit of the public and the promotion of health
Your project should describe how public health would be improved in one or more of the areas listed above. Your project results should be shared publicly.

We prefer projects to be completed within 18 months.

If you have an idea for a project that supports the Foundation’s strategic initiatives, but you are unsure if the research methodology of the project is viable, you should submit a grant proposal for a white paper that would evaluate the feasibility of the methodology and identify any major roadblocks. The Foundation will weigh the potential of the future project and its likely strength in alignment with the above-mentioned requirements when considering whether to support a white paper. If your white paper results reveal unsatisfactory methodology or roadblocks are present, this does not necessarily disqualify the future project from consideration for a grant; however, any future projects submitted for grant consideration would need to demonstrate these concerns had been addressed.

NCPDP is widely known for collaboration. Foundation grants may involve work undertaken by collaborating institutions. In such cases, the Foundation typically awards grant funds to a single grantee who is responsible, under the terms of the award, for reporting on the activities and expenditures of the collaborating organizations.

The Foundation requires timely and informative interim and final grant reporting that is tied to grant milestones and financial payments as approved by the Foundation. Narrative reports should describe the activities undertaken and the use of grant funds. Reports should also evaluate the progress made toward achieving the purposes of the grant during the reporting period. The Foundation may suspend grant activities and require the return of funds for delinquent or unsatisfactory reporting and will consider reporting history in the awarding of future grants.

Grant modification requests that may be considered by the Foundation Board include:
  • Extension of the grant period to permit additional time to complete supported activities or raise matching funds.
  • Reallocation of funds to permit spending in a manner different than described in the original budget.
  • Rollover of funds from an older Foundation grant into a newer grant given for the same purpose.
  • Extension of a matching period.
  • Transfer of grant funds from the original grantee to another.

On occasion, proposals to the Foundation involve consultants and third-party vendors. If selection of a vendor is made prior to the submission of the proposal, the proposal should include an explanation of how and why the subcontractor or consultant was selected. In addition, grantees should include the selected vendor’s budget. If the selection of a vendor is not made prior to submission, the proposal should estimate consulting costs as an average of the quotes received. The grantee is responsible for obtaining detailed budget information from potential consultants or subcontractors, as well as for accounting for contract review and negotiations in the project’s timelines. If key deliverables or milestones are impacted due to delays in securing contractors, please be aware the Foundation reserves the right to adjust delivery dates for funding.

Indirect costs may be incurred by a grant recipient for common or joint objectives that cannot be identified specifically with a particular project or program, such as facilities or administrative costs. The Foundation allows no more than 20% of a grant award to be put toward indirect costs.

The Foundation does not award grants for the following purposes:
  • Grants for fundraising events
  • Grants for operations/administrative support only
  • Grants for organizations that intend to redistribute the funds
  • Grants to replace government funding
  • Grants for sponsorships

Funds will be issued upon completion of milestones detailed in the proposal. Other options can be agreed upon in the completion of the grant award agreement. A grant award from the Foundation may be conditioned on the satisfaction of specific requirements where conditions are established. The Foundation will not make payment on the award unless and until all conditions have been met. The Foundation reserves the right to rescind a conditional grant when conditions have not been satisfied in a timely manner.

All questions that arise prior to the due date of the grant application can be sent to Irfaan Ali at irfaan@ncpdpfoundation.org. If you do not receive a response within 24 business hours, it is likely that your email went to a spam folder. In the event you do not receive a response from Irfaan in one full business day, please call 480-477-1000.
